Elementary Resource
What You'll See....
...if you visit our resource room.
Upon entering our classroom, you may be greeted by students, Mrs. Miller (paraprofessional) or
Mrs. Phelps.
Each student in our room has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that has been uniquely designed for their needs in reading, writing, and/or math. The IEP team that developed the program consists of the student, parent(s), classroom teacher(s), principal, AEA personnel and Mrs. Phelps.
Since we have students from kindergarten through fifth grade in our room, you may see a variety of activities happening at the same time.
You may see some students learning letter recognition and sounds. Some students may be getting "tested" on word recognition from words in their individualized word bank. Others may be practicing their reading with "reading phones." A few students may be doing reading activities at the computers, with iPads or the "ActivTable." Others may be "Parking to Read" on a bean bag or with Harvey, the tiger. You may see some students working with Mrs. Phelps while using the "Corrective Reading" materials.
You may find some students practicing their writing with individual white boards, in sand, fingerpaint or shaving cream. Some may be working on spelling, others writing sentences and paragraphs. You may see some students using Franklin Spellers or word processors to help them do assignments.
You may observe students learning numeral recognition, number comprehension, and/or rote counting. Some students may be using Touch-Math or calculators to increase their addition or subtraction skills. Others may be using real money, a Coin-u-lator or money games to practice money skills. You may find some students practicing their multiplication skills with silly stories. A few students may be doing math tasks using the Academy of Math at the computers, using iPads or the "ActivTable."
Of course, we all know that learning is more fun when playing games, but shhhhhhh, don't tell the students they are still learning if you witness some games being played in the resource room. We have numerous reading and math games to keep us occupied on Fridays when Mrs. Phelps is doing her reading and math probes.
Please feel free to visit whenever you want.
